Councillor Janet Cropley nominated as Mayor Elect

23 July, 2010

Mt Alexander Shire has nominated its first female Mayor.

Following last month’s announcement that Cr Philip Schier would step down from his role as Mayor three months early, Councillors last night discussed the proposal to nominate a Mayor Elect, in order to facilitate a smooth transition.

It was agreed that the Mayor Elect process would allow time for an effective hand over of duties to the new Mayor, while also allowing the newly elected Mayor to make the necessary arrangements around work and family commitments.

The discussions resulted in Cr Janet Cropley being endorsed by her fellow Councillors to be elected Mayor at the Ordinary Council meeting to be held on Tuesday 24 August, and until then she will be the Mayor Elect. This Mayoral term will continue until December when Councillors will elect a Mayor for a new term.

Cr Cropley will be the first female Mayor in Mount Alexander Shire. She is the elected representative for the Tarrengower Ward.

“I have worked on Council with Janet for almost two years and I know that she will bring great commitment and skill to her new role as Mayor,” said Cr Philip Schier, Mayor of Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“She has a diverse range of life experience both inside and outside local government. Over the next few weeks I will work closely with Cr Cropley to hand over duties that come with being the Mayor,” he said.
