12 July, 2010
Last Thursday night CI attended the glamourous launch of a booklet showcasing Victoria’s cultural attractions at the Newport Substation. Arts Minister Peter Batchelor said the Victoria’s 2010-11 Cultural Guide detailed information about what to see and do across the state.
“From our major cultural landmarks to local treasures and quirky gems, this free guide brings together 72 of Victoria’s exciting arts and cultural attractions,” he said.
“Going through the guide you can see exactly why Victoria is Australia’s number one cultural destination, and why arts and culture have become a major drawcard for tourists.
“Last year domestic overnight visitors to Melbourne spent $4.6 billion, $92 million more than Sydney, and international overnight visitors to Victoria are staying longer and spending more in the state (up 9.1 per cent last year to $3.8 billion)”.
“Culture is a driving force in how people are choosing to book their holidays, and Victoria is well placed in this regard.
“Major cultural events like the annual Melbourne Winter Masterpieces blockbuster exhibitions and our major festivals bring hundreds of thousands of tourists to town.
“Our many diverse cultural, creative and heritage attractions and events also help provide a vibrant year-round offering.”
The 2010-11 Cultural Guide includes Victoria’s unique statewide network of public galleries, the National Trust’s offerings, leading performing arts companies like Melbourne Symphony, Melbourne Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre and The Australian Ballet, the Melbourne International Arts Festival, and Museum Victoria’s three campuses.
Other highlights include the Newport Substation, McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park at Langwarrin, The Johnston Collection in East Melbourne, Black Rock House and the Jewish Holocaust Centre, as well as regional attractions such as the Golden Dragon Museum, the National Wool Museum in Geelong, Brian Nunan’s Studio Gallery in Bendigo, Bonegilla Migrant Experience in Wodonga, Portland Maritime Discovery Centre and Wangaratta Jazz Festival.
