Over the Moon dance performance
10 September, 2010
The anual Over the Moon dance performance is on this weekend at the Phee Broadway Theatre, Castlemaine. Edna Reinhardt’s school performs works by students, teachers and local dance artists.
Performance times: Sat 11 Sept 2pm, Sat 11 Sept, 7pm, Sun 12 Sept, 11am, Sun 12 Sept, 3pm. Adults: $25, Children: $15 Tickets available from Malmaison or at the door.
All ages are presented in this high production-value show. Hundreds of people, including students and family volunteers, are involved. Costumes are made locally, and volunteers escort the performers from a separate building as the Phee can’t hold them all. The logistics come together, and so does the community, to celebrate dance and the students’ year of work and progress. Don’t miss it.
Part of Edna’s gift to her students, our community, and particularly the young women that have grown up dancing with Over the Moon, is that the body and movement are not commodified as in music video clips or other advertising. Nor is it subject to the strict harshness of formal ballet.
At the annual Over the Moon dance performance we see the students rising to meet challenges, and experiencing the exhilaration of performance, and presenting themselves within a structure that is respectful and celebratory.

Plenty of young men attend Over the Moon as well!

Agreed Tom and the school is remarkable for that. I think that the place of the body in our society has been hijacked by advertising: magazines, movies, dolls, music video clips, cosmetics… etc and this is more of a problem for women than men. The body sense that Over the Moon students have seems to hold out against this onslaught and this I celebrate.
