The pool saga continues (plus ca change)

4 November, 2010

From a Council press release:
Council is continuing its efforts to enable the Chewton community to take control of Chewton swimming pool. At its meeting on 28 September 2010 Council decided to delay demolition of the Chewton pool and to enter into negotiations with the State Government to have the pool transferred to the Chewton community.
“Officers have met with representatives from the Department of Sustainability and Environment to clarify the process for the transfer to take place and we are still waiting to hear back as to how the Government wants to handle it,” said Cr Janet Cropley, Mayor of Mount Alexander Shire.

The Chewton community is being kept informed of progress.

Earlier in the year Council resolved to close the pool, for reasons, they say, relating to its structure and condition. Council also supported continued operation of a network of aquatic facilities including Harcourt, Maldon, Newstead and in Castlemaine. Preparation is well advanced for the coming season and opening hours and programs on offer at the pools will be widely publicised.

“Council will do all it can to enable the Chewton community to take over responsibility for the Chewton pool,” said Cr Cropley.

“However, I would point out that the age and poor condition of the facility and serious concerns regarding its public safety led to Council’s decision to close the pool.”

Local community representatives will be allowed to inspect the pool so they can get advice.

In light of Council’s advice from expert consultants and Council’s recent decisions, the pool will not re-open while it is Council’s responsibility.

Any future arrangements will be up to the State Government in consultation with the Chewton community.

Council is continuing to consider the development of an indoor aquatic and leisure centre and will shortly consider information concerning the environmental impacts of a new indoor centre and Council’s financial capacity to deliver on its plans for improved facilities for sport and recreation across the Shire.
