Chewton Pool good to go

25 February, 2011

Dear Editor,

On Tuesday evening, Mount Alexander Shire Council voted to provide $25,000 per annum for three years towards the operating costs of the Chewton Pool, provided DSE nominates a community committee as the Crown Land Committee of Management for the facility and responsibility is shifted from Council.

We will now be able to proceed to finalise the business plan and request the Minister for Environment, responsible for Crown Lands, to approve Chewton Pool Inc. as the land manager.

This represents a positive step towards our goal of retaining a community pool for our growing numbers of young families coming to Chewton and surrounds.

We will now be working with DSE to move this forward so that come next Summer children can learn to swim and young people will have a local place to meet and recreate.

This is a far cry from Council’s previous decision last July to close and demolish our outdoor pool!

We will now move to planning for repairs and training of volunteers and staff to be ready for next season. Your contributions to date have been great and we will need your ongoing support to give this much-loved community asset its makeover.

Rose Darling
Chewton Pool Inc.
