VLGA welcomes organic and waste funding for regions

Nothing ever gets thrown 'away'

VLGA President, Cr Samantha Dunn today welcomed the announcement by Environment and Climate Change Minister, Ryan Smith, of Victorian Government funding to assist reduction of food waste and organics ending up in landfills across the State.

The Minister announced a package of $5.5 million to be administered through Sustainability Victoria.

“The VLGA has encouraged the State Government to assist local governments to reduce organics in landfill, especially those in rural areas,” Cr Dunn said.

“This was a focus of our submission to the review of Sustainability Victoria, and in our advocacy to the Minister.

“These funds will be a welcome addition to the investments already made by local governments and regional waste management groups. We are very pleased to see the Minister taking the lead in this regard.”

The funding package includes $2.5 million for a regional organics strategy to be led by Sustainability Victoria partnering with Regional Waste Management Groups and local governments to provide support for new, state-of-the-art systems for waste recovery and organic composting; and $3 million to support Regional Waste Management Groups to fund and deliver priority projects in their areas.

“We were also pleased to see the Minister’s announcement last week of $3.5 million for rural landfill support,” Cr Dunn said.

“Many of our rural member local governments have a limited rate base, and the transition to better
waste management systems can be prohibitive for them without financial support from other levels of government.

“We look forward to hearing more about the funding package from Sustainability Victoria, and we especially welcome the regional organics strategy. Many of our members are keen to reduce organics in landfill sites, in seeking to reduce their carbon footprints. Aside from public lighting, emissions from landfill can be one of the greatest environmental issues for local governments.”

“Our members are also keen to hear more from the Minister about how metropolitan local governments can reduce organic waste in landfill and whether there will be a further announcement of funds to support them. This is an issue for the whole of the VLGA’s membership, and we wish to ensure that the Landfill Levy collected by local governments is distributed to projects across Victoria.”
